31 December 2021 Current Affairs:In China’s Shanghai Province, the world’s longest metro line was inaugurated on 31 December.

Highlights:

  • Shanghai maintains its position as the world’s largest metro network with this inauguration. Line 14 and Phase One of Line 18 are the two new metro lines that the city has opened.
  • The total length of Shanghai’s metro network has now reached 831 kilometers. It maintains its position as the world’s longest network.
  • With the addition of two new lines, Shanghai now has a total of five fully automatic metro lines with a total operating length of 167 kilometers.
  • In Shanghai, there are now 20 metro lines and 508 stations. 83 of the 508 stations are transfer stations.
  • Shanghai is one of China’s four municipalities with direct administration. It is situated on the Yangtze River’s southern estuary. 
  • It is also crossed by the Huangpu River. The city is not only China’s most populous urban area but also the world’s most populous city.
  • It is the only city in East Asia with a GDP that exceeds that of its capital. The New Development Bank’s headquarters are in Shanghai. 
  • Every year, around 70 foreign representatives as well as numerous national and international events, such as Shanghai Fashion Week, ChinaJoy, and the Chinese Grand Prix, are hosted in the city.
