08 November 2021 Current Affairs:The world’s first medication to treat symptomatic COVID-19 has been approved by British health officials.
Highlights
♦ The antiviral molnupiravir has been found to be safe and effective in reducing the risk of hospitalization and death in patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at elevated risk of developing the condition, according to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
♦ Ridgeback Biotherapeutics and Merck collaborated on the pill, which works by interfering with the virus’ replication.
♦ This stops it from growing, keeping viral levels low in the body and so minimizing disease severity, according to the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency of the United Kingdom.
♦ It can also be given outside of a hospital setting.
