Upstream of Polavaram Dam

08 July 2021 Current Affairs:A breach in the Godavari bund, located upstream of the Polavaram dam in Andhra Pradesh, was caused by increased inflows and stagnant backwaters.

About the Polavaram Irrigation Project:
♦ It is a multi-purpose irrigation project located in Andhra Pradesh near Polavaram village on the Godavari River.
♦ Once completed, it will provide irrigation benefits, generate hydroelectric power, and provide drinking water.
♦ It will make an inter-basin transfer to the Krishna river basin via its Right canal.
♦ Indirect benefits include the advancement of pisciculture (fish breeding and rearing), tourism, and urbanisation.
♦ In 2014, the union government designated the project as a national project (under Section-90 of Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act, 2014).

About Godavari River:
♦ Origin: The Godavari River flows from Trimbakeshwar near Nasik in Maharashtra to the Bay of Bengal.
♦ Drainage Basin: Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, as well as smaller portions of Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, and Puducherry.
♦ Tributaries includes: Pravara, Purna, Wardha, Manjra, Wainganga, Penganga, Pranhita, Indravati, Maner, and the Sabri.
