Technique to Improve the Performance Of Lithium-Ion Batteries

13 April 2021 Current Affairs:Researchers at IIT Guwahati have developed a technology to improve the performance of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that can power most of the portable devices in use today.

♦ Stanley Whittingham, John Goodenough and Akira Yoshino jointly won the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in recognition of their work to promote the development of lithium-ion batteries.
♦ These batteries are used in most mobile phones, smart phones, tablets, laptops and power banks, and other devices.
♦ Today, most electric vehicles (EVs) also use lithium-ion batteries, but they are gradually reaching their theoretical limit, which can provide approximately 300 watt-hours of electrical energy per kilogram of energy.
♦ These batteries can also be used to store solar and wind energy, which means that with their widespread use, it may even live in a fuel-free society.
