Potential Treatment for Alzheimer Disease

26 February 2021 Current Affairs:JNCASR scientists have developed a new molecule that is expected to become a potential drug candidate for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. JNCASR-Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, autonomous institute under the Dept. of Science and Technology, GOI. Located in Bangalore.
Highlights:
♦ Scientists have developed a small molecule that disrupts the mechanism of neuronal dysfunction in Alzheimer’s disease (AD).
♦ This molecule may be a potential drug candidate (70-80%) to stop or cure the main cause of dementia in the world.
♦ Alzheimer’s Disease: In Alzheimer’s brain, abnormal levels of naturally occurring proteins clump together to form plaques that gather between neurons and disrupt cell function. This is caused by the production and deposition of amyloid peptide (Aβ) accumulated in the central nervous system.
♦ The multifactorial nature of Alzheimer’s disease due to the multifaceted toxicity of amyloid prevents researchers from developing effective treatments.
