25 March 2021 Current Affairs:In the Assam parliamentary elections, different political parties claimed to have greatly reduced the poaching of Greater One-Horned Rhino. According to the Assam Forest Department, poaching activities have been reduced by 86% in the past three years.
Highlights:
♦ The Greater One-Horned Rhino  is one of five different kinds of rhinos. The other four rhinos are: black rhino, white rhino, Javan rhino and Sumatran rhino
♦ There are three types of rhinos in Asia: Greater one-horned (Rhinoceros unicornis), Javan and Sumatran.
♦ Only Great One-Horned Rhino are found in India.
♦ Also known as the Indian rhinoceros, it is the largest rhino species.
♦ Identified by a black horn and gray-brown hide with skin folds.
♦ Rhinoceros mainly eat grass, and their diet consists of entirely grass, leaves, branches of shrubs and trees, fruits and aquatic plants.
♦ Habitat – Indo-Nepal Terai and northern West Bengal and Assam.
♦ In India, rhinos are mainly distributed in Assam, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
♦ Assam has an estimated 2,640 rhinos in four protected areas, namely Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary, Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park, Kaziranga National Park and Manas National Park.
