The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs authorized the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) for 2021-2026 on 15 December.
Rs.93,068 crores were spent on the scheme, and CCEA authorized Rs. 37,454 crore in government funding for states.
The debt servicing for a loan taken out by the Government of India to enhance irrigation during PMKSY 2016-21 has been sanctioned at Rs 20,434.56 crore.
The Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Program (AIBP), Watershed Development, and Har Khet ko Paani (HKKP) components of the scheme have all been extended for 2021-2026.
Accelerated Irrigation Benefit Program is a flagship program of the Indian government that aims to provide financial assistance to irrigation projects.
With the program’s continuance from 2022 to 2026, 13.88 lakh hectares of different irrigation potential would be created.
Additional initiatives can be undertaken and the focused completion of 60 current projects.
The Cabinet has loosened the requirements for projects in tribal and drought-prone areas.
The scheme’s Har Khet Ko Pani component aims to improve physical access on farms and expand cultivable land under guaranteed irrigation.
It aims to offer more than 4.5 lakh hectares of irrigation by repairing, renovating, and restoring water bodies and surface minor irrigation components.
This part of the plan focuses on developing rainfed regions for soil and water conservation, stopping runoff, regenerating groundwater, and boosting water harvesting and management extension efforts.
Between 2021 and 2026, the planned Watershed Development component will cover 49.5 million hectares of rainfed or degraded areas, bringing an extra 2.5 million hectares under-protected irrigation.
