Medicine from the Sky Pilot at Vikarabad Hospital

20 May 2021 Current Affairs:The Telangana state government has selected 16 major medical centers (PHCs) located around the Vikarabad Regional Hospital to test the ambitious “air medicine”, the first involving transportation by multiple drones’ Similar items of drugs. 

Highlights:
♦ Due to the existence of cold chain facilities, hospitals in this area have been selected as the central point, and the selected primary medical centers are both within the Vision Line of Sight (VLOS) and Beyond the Vision Line of Sight (BVLOS).
♦ A consortium of seven operators led by Blue Dart Med-Express has been selected for the project. The project will initially be launched within a VLOS range of 500 meters and will gradually be expanded to a range of 9 km.
♦ The project will start with a pilot, launch in three batches, and then draw a roadmap to plan drone operations for the delivery of vaccines/medicine at the required community health centers and primary health care centers.
♦ The project was launched after the Ministry of Civil Aviation approved the country’s request for a conditional exemption from the 2021 Unmanned Aircraft Systems Regulations for experimental BVLOS drone flights to deliver vaccines.
