The Government of India has amended the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, to protect the interests of the consumers in the country.

Highlights

The unit sale price of the products should imperatively be displayed on the package.
This allows the consumers to make knowledgeable decisions irrespective of the volume and size of the commodity packed in the package.
Also, this will remove the inexactness in the proclamation of quantity in pre-packed products.
The number of pieces that depict the quantity in the package should be specified in the package.
This will remove the uncertainty in items sold by number. Earlier, such proclamations were made as ‘N’ or ‘U’.
The stocks of Maximum Retail Price (MRP) should be interpreted. The illustration and mandatory proclamation of MRP in Indian currency, including taxes, have been eliminated. Metrology involves the science of measurement and its application.
