12 October 2021 Current Affairs:Clove spice grown within the hills of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu has been awarded a geographical indication (GI) as ‘Kanyakumari clove’. 

Highlights
♦ In India, the entire production of cloves is 1,100 metric tons. 
♦ Of this, 1,000 metric tons is produced in Tamil Nadu each year, while 750 metric loads of cloves are produced within the Kanyakumari district alone.
♦ With 760 hectares, Clove is one of the significant spice crops grown in the district’s densely wooded areas of Maaraamalai, Blackrock and Velimalai in the Western Ghats of the Veerapuli Reserve Forests and Mahendragiri.
♦ The Districts represent about 73% of the area under Clove in Tamil Nadu. 
♦ The Maaraamalai Planters Association and Blackrock Hill Planters Association made efforts to secure the special GI Tag recognition for the impressive clove variety in Kanyakumari.
