20 October 2021 Current Affairs:India and the Taliban meet at the “Moscow Format” meeting on October 20 hosted by Russia. 

Highlights
♦ The India and Taliban meeting is expected to form a comprehensive government and security situation in Afghanistan.
♦ The meeting will be participated by India, Afghanistan, Iran, the USA, Pakistan, China and Central Asian states.
♦ Participants will also discuss the issues of uniting efforts of the international community to stop a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.
♦ This is the first edition of the Moscow Format on Afghanistan ever since the Taliban came to power. 
♦ India held its first meeting with the Taliban on August 31, 2021, in Doha.

Moscow Format Meeting
♦ The Moscow Format was set up in the year 2017 as a six-party mechanism. 
♦ It involved Russia, India, Afghanistan, Iran, China and Pakistan. 
♦ Its meetings were held in Moscow in 2017 and 2018.
♦ Moscow Format Meeting on Afghanistan will enable the first formal contact between India and the Taliban.
♦ From the Indian side, the meeting will be headed by joint secretary JP Singh, the head of the Pakistan-Afghanistan-Iran desk in the external affairs ministry.
♦ The Russian side seeks to hold a serious conversation with the representatives of the new Afghan leadership and convey their problems to the Afghan delegation.
♦ Terror threats related to Afghanistan and Fighting drug trafficking will be a priority for Russia and other countries.
