Gangetic River Dolphin Beaten to Death

In the city of Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, a Gangetic Dolphin was beaten to death. According to the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, killing the Ganges river dolphin is a punishable crime.
About Gangetic Dolphin
♦ Scientific Name: Platanista gangetica
These are generally blind.
They capture prey by emitting ultrasound waves that reach the prey.
These are also called Susu.
Found mainly in the Indian subcontinent, especially in the Ganga-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Karnaphuli-Sangu river systems and tributaries of the Ganges.
Threats: Dam construction, Pollution, excessive silting and sand mining.
It has been recognized as a National Aquatic Animal by the Indian government
It is the official animal of Guwahati in Assam.
IUCN status: Endangered
