Features Of UNSC Resolution On Afghan Assistance

24 December 2021 Current Affairs:The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously passed a resolution on December 22, 2021, allowing for sanctions exemptions against the Taliban.
Highlights:
- The exemptions are intended to make humanitarian aid delivery to Afghanistan easier.
- It covers urgent humanitarian assistance and other activities in Afghanistan to meet basic human needs.
- It will primarily benefit low-income or at-risk populations, as well as alleviate human suffering in other ways.
- Among the services and activities provided are:
- Assistance with finding a home and settling in
- Food safety is important.
- Support for education and livelihood
- Energy and Water Sanitation, as well as Health, Nutrition, and Hygiene, including COVID-related assistance.
UNSC Resolution 2615
- The UNSC resolution requires a six-month review of the exemptions. It also encourages assistance providers to make every effort to prevent benefits from flowing to entities on the 1988 Sanctions List.
- It also asks for an Emergency Relief Coordinator to report to the UN Security Council every six months on the delivery of assistance.
- It urged all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law and respect human rights.
- In light of the fact that half of Afghanistan’s population is suffering from acute food insecurity, India has backed the UNSC resolution to exempt Afghanistan from sanctions.

- The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the UN’s six main organs (UN). Its mission is to maintain international peace and security.
- In addition to recommending new UN members for admission to the UN General Assembly, the body also approves any changes to the UN Charter.
- It has the authority to set up peacekeeping missions, authorize military action, and impose international sanctions.
