22 October 2021 Current Affairs:On October 21st, the Union Cabinet approved a 3% increase in dearness allowance (DA) for central government employees and dearness relief (DR) for pensioners, compared to the current amount of 28% of basic pay/pension.

Highlights
♦The 3% increase is in addition to the existing rate of 28% of basic pay/pension. About 47.14 lakh Central government employees and 68.62 lakh retirees will profit from the measure. It will cost the government Rs 9,488.70 crore a year.
♦After a meeting earlier in the day, the Union Cabinet approved the DA and DR hikes. For central government employees and retirees, this is a positive development.
♦After nearly a year, the government officially approved pending DA and DR increases for central government employees and pensioners in July 2021.
