COVISHIELD – Gap Between Doses Increased

14 May 2021 Current Affairs:The Indian government widened the gap between the two doses of the COVISHIELD vaccine. The gap increased from six to eight weeks to twelve to sixteen weeks. This is the second time in three months, and the difference between COVISHIELD doses has widened. In March 2021, the Union Territories and State Governments are required to increase the time interval from 28 days to 6 to 8 weeks.

Highlights:
♦ Based on real-life data from the United Kingdom, the COVID-19 Working Group suggested to increase the gap.
♦ NEGVAC approved the suggestions (National Expert Group on Vaccine Administration). The interval between doses is currently four to six weeks.
♦ If the difference between the doses increases, the protective effect of the vaccine will also increase. In Canada, the interval between doses is three to four months.
♦ A Lancet study showed that if the difference between doses increases from 6 weeks to 8 weeks to 12 weeks to 16 weeks, the protection (efficacy) against COVID-19 will increase from 55.1% to 81.3%.
