Centre Requires States to Divide Wage Payments Under The MGNREGA Scheme Into Different Categories

04 June 2021 Current Affairs:From the start of the financial year, the Centre has directed states to divide wage payments under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme into separate categories for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and others. The government will also provide separate budget heads for the SC and ST categories. Funds will be allocated based on job cards provided for SC and ST beneficiaries.

About MGNREGA:
♦ It was formed in 2005.
♦ Goal – To improve people’s livelihood security in rural areas.
♦ It is a universal programme that provides 100 days of wage employment per year to every rural household that expresses a desire.
♦ Its goal is to guarantee the ‘Right to Work.’
♦ Every registered household receives a Job Card (JC) to keep track of the work they have completed.
♦ The scheme is carried out by the gramme panchayat.
♦ Failure to provide employment within 15 days of receiving the job application will result in the payment of unemployment benefits to the job seeker.
♦ Employment must be available within 5 kilometres of an applicant’s home.
♦ Employment under MGNREGA is a legal right.
