CEM – Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative

07 June 2021 Current Affairs:Under the Clean Energy Ministerial’s (CEM) Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI), India and the United Kingdom launched a new workstream to promote industrial energy efficiency.
UNIDO is in charge of coordinating it (United Nations Development Industrial organisation). It was launched at the ongoing 12th CEM (CEM12) conference and was actually hosted by Chile.
About 12th CEM Meeting:
Goal: Infuse green technologies and increase demand for low-carbon industrial materials.
♦ By 2030, India intends to reduce emissions intensity per unit of GDP by 33 to 35 percent.
♦ The commitment is contingent on the effective deployment of low-carbon technologies in energy-intensive industries such as iron and steel, cement, and petrochemicals.
About Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM):
♦ It was established at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) CoP in Copenhagen in December 2009.
♦ Promote policies and programs that promote clean energy technologies
♦ Sharing lessons and best practices
♦ Encourage the transition to a global clean energy economy.
Industrial Deep Decarbonization Initiative (IDDI):
♦ CEM has launched the IDDI initiative.
♦ It is a global alliance of public and private organisations working to increase demand for low-carbon industrial materials.
♦ Encouraging governments and the private sector to purchase low-carbon steel and cement.
♦ Data sourcing and sharing for common standards and goals.
