Canada Approves Mixing & Matching Covid-19 Vaccine Brands

03 June 2021 Current Affairs:”Mixing and Matching” of AstraZeneca, Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines are recommended by Canada. Canadians who received a first dose of Moderna or Pfizer can now receive a second dose of either of two shots. This is due to the fact that both vaccines were created using similar mRNA technology.

Highlights:
♦ The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) issued guidelines for provinces and territories regarding the mixing and matching of second doses of Covid-19 vaccines. 
♦ It recommends that Canadians use the “AstraZeneca-Oxford, Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna shots” interchangeably under certain circumstances.
♦ NACI recommended it based on preliminary research from the United Kingdom and Spain.
♦ According to the findings, mixing shots of AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines was both safe and effective in preventing the disease.
♦ It is advised that the first shot of AstraZeneca vaccine be followed by shots of Moderna or Pfizer.
