Anti-COVID Drug – DRDO

10 May 2021 Current Affairs:The DCGI has provided the green light to a DRDO-developed anti-COVID drug for emergency use.

Highlights:
♦ The Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS) has collaborated with Dr Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL) in Hyderabad to develop an anti-COVID-19 therapeutic application of the drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG).
♦ INMAS is a laboratory operated by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
♦ The outcomes of clinical trials have shown that this molecule aids in the quicker recovery of hospitalised patients and decreases the need for supplemental oxygen.
♦ In COVID patients, a higher proportion of patients treated with 2-DG had RT-PCR negative conversion.
