The 5th India Water Impact Summit (IWIS) organized by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the Center for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga) has held virtually.
Key Facts:
♦ The India Water Impact Summit 2020 is a five-day summit. Experts and scholars from all around the world participate in the meeting to discuss and debate issues related to water conservation, water security and river rejuvenation.
♦ Theme: Focus on the comprehensive analysis and overall management of local rivers and water bodies in Arth Ganga- river conservation synchronised development.
♦ At the event, the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomyand cGanga signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a sludge management framework in India.
National Mission for Clean Ganga – NMCG:
NMCG is the wing of the National Council for Rejuvenation, Protection, and Management of River Ganga also known as national Ganga Council (in 2016; which replaced the NRGBA). NMCG was established in 2011 and is a registered society. It has a two-level management structure, including Governing Council and an Executive Committee.
The goals & objectives of NMCG:
♦ In order to ensure effective control of the Ganges River pollution and rehabilitation, a river basin approach is adopted to promote inter-departmental coordination for comprehensive planning and management.
♦ To maintain minimum ecological flow in the river Ganga with the aim of ensuring water quality and environmentally sustainable development.
♦ In 2014, ‘NamamiGangeProgramme’ was launched as an Integrated Conservation Mission, to accomplish the twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation, and rejuvenation of National River Ganga.
Centre for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga):
It was established in 2016 at the Indian Institute of Technology (IITK) in Kanpur. The centre is a centre of excellence for collecting data, creating and disseminating knowledge and information for the sustainable development of the Ganga River Basin. The centre provides a comprehensive think tank for the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) with its established goals and objectives for the Ganges River Basin.
