India- Mexico held their 8th Joint Commission Meeting on 29 October 2020. The Meeting was co-chaired by Dr. S. Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of Republic of India (EAM) and H. E. Marcelo Ebrard, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States.
Highlights
- Both the countries reviewed their bilateral cooperation in areas including agriculture, investment, trade, education, and health.
- The countries agreed to strengthen their partnership with respect to economic strengths, growing regional and global profile.
- They discussed and agreed to add new areas of cooperation in the fields of Trade and Commerce, Agriculture, Energy, Space, Health, Science & Technology, Culture & Education .
- The countries also highlighted the importance of the Joint Commission mechanism to deepen political dialogue and to review bilateral and multilateral co-operation.
- They agreed to utilize their upcoming term in the UN Security Council to strengthen multilateralism and to make it more representative and effective.
- They also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, including the post COVID economic recovery plans.
- Lastly, they agreed to coordinate closely on the multilateral platform on the basis of their views on global and regional issues.
Background
The fifth meeting of the group was held recently in early October 2020. The countries discussed about Framework on Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures, Bilateral Investment Treaty, cooperation in Intellectual Property Rights, Market Access for Agricultural Products and ways to improve tourism. Memorandum of Understanding were also signed in the field of Computer Software & Telecommunications, Electronics & Information Technologies and Foreign Trade, Investment & Technology.
India-Mexico relation
India and Mexico enjoys ‘Privileged Partnership’ since 2007. Later, in 2015, both the countries agreed to work on ‘Strategic Partnership’. After that, the countries have signed bilateral agreements on Extradition, Space Cooperation, Investment Promotion and Protection and Administrative assistance in customs matters. Mexico is currently the largest trading partner of India while India is the ninth most important trading partner of Mexico. The bilateral trade between them was 10 billion USD in 2018. India exports gems, textiles, leather, jewellery and chemicals to Mexico while India imports machinery, petroleum, fertilizers and chemicals from Mexico.

भारत-मेक्सिको संबंध
